About Southampton

Southampton situated on the south coast of England.It is also the largest city of the Hampshire town. It covers 51.81 km2 area and has population of 254,275 (Jan-July 2016 census). It is famous for ports and ships like HMS warrior, the Tudor carrack Mary Rose etc. A resident of Southampton is known as Sononian who is also representing one of the largest social online communities of the world. Southampton F.C is the famous football club.

HISTORY

It came into existence during the stone era. After the victory of The Romans over the local Britons in 70 AD. Due to its existence near coastal Area, it has been used for trading as well as defensive outpost Winchester for many years. It developed as a major port of movement between Winchester and Normandy during 1066. During the 13th century, French wine was the famous item exchanged for English cloth and wool. The unfortunate and disliked event “The black death “occurred between June 1348 and Dec 1349. During Victorian era, with the formation of Southampton Dock Company in 1842, more facilitation of ships was there and ultimately became the gateway to the empire. The famous Titanic ship sailed on its first and last voyage from Southampton. It was also famous for museums and art galleries like Sea city museum, Solent sky, God’s House Tower, Tudor house and garden, Southampton city art gallery and a few more.
