York

York is a walled city and county town of the North Yorkshire in England, also known as the ancient capital of Yorkshire. It is located at the meeting point of two rivers Ouse and Foss with a population of around 198,051 in 2011 census. The history of the city traced its root back to the Roman period. The city developed as a major trading centre of wool and became the capital of Christian churches in the period of middle Ages. The population of the city declined post Romans period due to occasional floods from Foss and Ouse rivers. Oswald constructed the first wooden Minster church in the city and Alcuin founded the St Peter’s School in 627 AD. During the Tudor period (16th to 18th century), the city became a major development centre for trading and manufacturing due to its strategic location and closeness to Great North Road.

The railway was introduced in the city in 1839 by George Hudson and became major railway centre by the end of 19th century. The wealth of the city boomed with the establishment of two major industries in the city: Railways and Confectionery. The economy of the city is based on service sector including tourism, education, information technology and public sector employment contributing 88.7% of employment in the city.

Travel and Tourism have become one of the essential features of the economy. The city is famous for its rich heritage, historical locations, cultural and sports activities. With the influx of tourists in the city, the historic area was designated as a conservation area in 1968 and became the main asset of the city. According to the recent survey, the city is voted as the safest place to visit and European Tourism City of the year. According to UK residents, the city is at a seventh place as a most visited city.
